Using Maps and Sites

This web portal features an interactive map and other mapping resources to explore sites related to the Catto story and America’s civil rights history. Field trips, as well as using Google tools in the classroom, offer ways to see how these stories are evident around us today. These exercises also offer a lens into how, as Americans, we build and maintain our historical memory through commemoration. Several of the individuals presented in Catto’s People have historical markers in states around the United States. A great exercise is to have students locate these markers and then explore ways that these individuals connect with Catto to reveal the scope and breath of the early civil rights story around the Civil War. Comparisons can also be made between Catto’s time and the national movement of Martin Luther King.
